Why siding work needs the right material choice
Siding is the first impression of your home and the protective layer over everything inside it. The right material depends on your home, your budget, your maintenance tolerance, and the look you want. We carry both vinyl and fiber cement, and we will be honest with you about which is the better call for your project.
We have installed siding on Northern Virginia homes since 2013. We know which materials hold up to our weather (humid summers, cold winters, freeze-thaw cycles), which neighborhoods have HOA color requirements to navigate, and which products are worth the money.

Siding materials we install
The right siding material depends on your budget, your maintenance tolerance, and the look you want. We carry both major categories and will tell you honestly which fits your project.
Vinyl Lap Siding
The standard horizontal clapboard profile. Modern vinyl is far thicker and more colorfast than it was 20 years ago. Low maintenance, no painting, lifetime warranties on most lines.
Insulated Vinyl Siding
Same lap profile as standard vinyl but with a foam-backing layer bonded to the back. Adds R-value, reduces exterior noise transmission, and improves impact resistance.
Board & Batten Vinyl
Vertical profile with alternating wide and narrow panels. A clean, modern look that works well on contemporary homes or as a mixed-texture accent with horizontal siding.
Vinyl Shake & Shingle
Textured panels that mimic the look of cedar shake. Popular for gables, dormers, and below-roofline accent areas. Lower maintenance than real cedar with no rot risk.
James Hardie HardiePlank
Fiber cement lap siding that looks like painted wood up close. Lasts 30+ years, holds paint exceptionally well, fire resistant. The premium choice for Northern Virginia homes.
James Hardie HardiePanel
Fiber cement vertical panel siding. The smooth or slightly textured face works well for contemporary homes, mixed-texture designs, or as an accent on portions of the exterior.

What happens after you call
Most siding projects follow three predictable steps. We do not leave job sites mid-project or hand off to a different crew.

Common questions about siding
Should I choose vinyl or James Hardie fiber cement?
Vinyl is the right call for most Northern Virginia homeowners — it is significantly less expensive, requires zero maintenance, and the quality of modern vinyl is dramatically better than 20 years ago. Fiber cement is the right call if you want the premium look of painted wood, a longer expected lifespan (30+ years), or if resale value is a primary concern. We carry both and will give you written prices for each so you can make the call based on actual numbers.
How long does siding installation take?
Most Northern Virginia siding projects take 2 to 3 days for a typical colonial or split-level home. Single-story ranches often finish in a day. Larger homes or projects that include extensive trim work, fascia replacement, or soffit work run 3 to 5 days. The same crew starts and finishes.
Do I need to replace the house wrap when I replace siding?
It depends on condition. We inspect the existing house wrap during tear-off. If it is intact and not torn, we leave it. If it is deteriorated, ripped, or improperly lapped, we replace it. House wrap replacement adds cost but prevents moisture issues behind the new siding.
Can you coordinate siding with trim, gutters, and soffit?
Yes — this is one of the advantages of using Virginia Exteriors. We do all exterior work with the same crew. Siding, trim wrapping, fascia, soffit, and gutter replacement can all be coordinated in a single project with color-matched materials. One estimate, one crew, one cleanup.
What warranty comes with new siding?
Most vinyl siding lines carry lifetime limited warranties covering defects and color fade. James Hardie carries a 30-year non-prorated warranty on most fiber cement products. Manufacturer warranties require proper installation per their specs — which is why the Hardie preferred contractor designation matters.
How much does siding cost in Northern Virginia?
A full siding replacement on a typical Northern Virginia colonial runs $12,000 to $25,000 depending on size, material, and the extent of trim and soffit work included. Vinyl is the lower end; fiber cement is the higher end. We measure your home and give you an itemized written price — no ballpark estimates.
From our customers
In five days, your expert team took away our badly faded aluminum siding and replaced it with beautiful grey Alcoa Premium Insulated vinyl with matching trim coil. Your suggestion of covering all our painted surfaces with aluminum trim was a good one. The larger gutters, the same color as the siding, blend in so well that they are much less noticeable.
