Why our door installs use full-frame tear-outs
When we install an exterior door, we pull the entire old frame out: jamb, threshold, brick mold, the works. Then the new door, frame, jamb depth, and slab size are all custom-fit to the opening we just measured.
The alternative, which a lot of companies offer, is a slab swap. They leave the existing frame in place and put a new door slab in it. It is faster and cheaper. It also means you are stuck with whatever is wrong with the old frame: warping, water damage, gaps that will not seal, a threshold that has settled. We do not do those.
This takes longer. It also lasts.
Full-frame
Not slab swaps
We remove the entire old frame. New door, new jamb, new threshold — all fit to your exact opening.

Typical lead time
Custom-ordered doors arrive in 4 to 6 weeks. We schedule install the week they land.
Door types we install
We install every common exterior door type. The right choice depends on your opening, your home’s style, and whether security, aesthetics, or energy performance is the priority.
Entry Doors
Steel, fiberglass, or wood-look fiberglass. The most-used door on your home. We install with sidelights and transoms in any standard configuration.
Fiberglass Doors
Wood-grain texture without the wood maintenance. Zero warping, zero rotting, better energy performance than steel. The most popular upgrade pick.
Steel Doors
Smooth or textured finish. Maximum security and impact resistance at the lowest price point. Right call when durability and security matter most.
French Doors
Double-door with glass throughout. Both panels operate, swinging in or out. Brings significantly more light than a single entry door.
Sliding Patio Doors
Space-efficient operation on a track. Good for kitchens and family rooms where a swinging door would interfere with furniture. Can slide either direction.
Storm Doors
Installed outside the entry door. Cuts drafts, blocks driving rain, adds a security layer. Extends the life of the door behind it.

Common questions about door installation
How long does door installation take?
Most exterior door installations take a single day. Full-frame tear-outs take longer than slab swaps — typically 4 to 6 hours per door — because we are removing and replacing the entire frame assembly, not just swapping the slab. Projects with multiple doors or complex configurations (sidelights, transoms, double-door patio sets) may run a full day per unit.
What is the difference between a full-frame tear-out and a slab swap?
A slab swap removes only the door panel and leaves the existing frame in place. It is faster and cheaper, but you are stuck with whatever the old frame has wrong with it — warping, water infiltration, a threshold that has settled. A full-frame tear-out removes everything: door, jamb, threshold, and brick mold. The new unit is built to fit the opening we just measured. We do not do slab swaps.
What is the difference between fiberglass and steel entry doors?
Fiberglass offers a realistic wood-grain texture, better energy performance, and zero risk of warping or rusting. It is the right call for most front entries. Steel is harder to dent, costs less, and is the stronger security choice — but it can rust if the finish is chipped and it does not insulate as well as fiberglass. For back doors or side entries where security matters more than aesthetics, steel is often the better choice.
Do I need a permit to replace an exterior door in Virginia?
For like-for-like replacements in the same rough opening with no structural changes, most Northern Virginia jurisdictions do not require a permit. Projects that change the opening size or add a new opening do require one. We tell you upfront if your project needs a permit and handle the application.
Can you install a door with sidelights or a transom?
Yes. We install entry door systems with sidelights (flanking glass panels) and transoms (glass above the door) in any standard configuration. The rough opening just needs to accommodate the full unit width. We assess this at the estimate visit.
How do I choose between a single and double entry door?
The main opening width drives this. Most single-door openings are 36 inches or 32 inches. Double-door openings (French doors or double-entry) typically run 60 to 72 inches. If your opening is designed for a single door and you want double, that requires a structural change — we will tell you at the estimate whether it makes sense for your home.
From our customers
Once again Virginia Exteriors has demonstrated performance beyond customer expectations! A team member stopped by to install a kick plate on our door and noticed the kick plate was damaged after pulling off the shrink wrap. He took it back to the store on his own time, picked up a replacement, and installed it. What an awesome example of customer service!
